Hendrick Goltzius (1558 - 1617)

Portrait of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. 1586. Hollstein 199, only state. Engraving, an oval, 61 x 53 mm (2 3/8 x 2 1/8") plus margins, printed from a gold medallion. A fine impression. Pale glue stains in margin corners.

Dudley was an English courtier, a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, and commander of the English troops in the Netherlands.

Provenance: P. Mariette, 1670 (Lugt 1789, but with the date 1669).
