André
Derain (1880-1954)
TETE
DE FEMME
(Head of a Woman). ca. 1910. Adhémar 37. Drypoint,
314 x 217 mm (12 3/8 x 8 1/2) plus full margins. Signed
in pencil. Fine, rich impression of this extremely striking
drypoint. In very good condition, except for a fold and
short repaired tear in the lower right margin corner.
Jane
Lee points out in her article The Prints of Derain,
Print Quarterly, VII, 1990, 1, that the style of this print
is not so much influenced by Cubism as inspired by a late
medieval wood carving of the Virgin and Child which Derain
kept in his studio.
