Jean Lepautre (1618-1682)
LE SACRIFICE D'IPHIGENIE (The Sacrifice of Iphigenia). ca. 1650. Preaud 185i (of ii), before the letters. Engraving, 187 x 212 mm plus margins, from Suite de vingt sujets de la Fable, printed by Pierre Mariette, the Elder. A fine impression, in very good condition.
When Agamemnon’s ships were stalled on the way to the Trojan War, a soothsayer revealed that the sacrifice of his daughter Iphigenia to Diana (Artemis) was necessary to restore favorable winds. Agamemnon proceeds to comply but, at the last minute, Diana swoops down, substitutes a deer for Iphigenia, and whisks Iphigenia away to Taurus.
