After
Federico Barocci (ca. 1535 - 1612)
THE REST ON THE
RETURN FROM EGYPT, ca.
1611. Bartsch XII, 36.11. Chiaroscuro woodcut from two blocks,
dark brown and raw umber, 349 X 280 mm (13 3/4 x 11")
trimmed along borderline. Very fine impression with fewer
flaws than are often seen on these woodcuts: soft diagonal
folds across upper left and lower right corners, with some
related rubbing, repaired tear into upper left edge, traces
of old mount and glue on verso, faint signs on verso of old
horizontal fold, reinforced at edges on verso.
According
to Louise Richards (E. Pillsbury and L.S. Richards: The
Graphic Art of Federico Barocci, Yale University Art Gallery,
1978, no. 80) in an inventory taken of Barocci's studio after
his death there was a description of a chiaroscuro woodcut
of the Flight into Egypt, which is probably this subject.
It reproduces a composition which the artist himself used
in two works, and which he allowed to be engraved by Rafaello
Schiaminossi in 1612. It is possible that the artist provided
the woodcutter a finished drawing to serve as a guide. This
print provides almost the only example of Barocci's interest
in the prints made by others after his own works.
