Honoré Daumier (1808-1879)

OU ALLONS NOUS, OU ALLONS NOUS?... (What are we coming to, what are we coming to?....we're walking on a volcano...) 1834. Delteil 89, only state. Lithograph, 210 x 260 mm (8 1/4 x 10 1/4") plus text and margins on white paper. Plate 425 from La Caricature. Fine impression, with a few tiny flaws.

The figure on the right and most of the subjects of the prints in the window of Aubert's print shop represent Le Constitutionnel, a liberal journal which was suffering a severe decline in subscriptions, hence was personified by a dotard. He shares views with Charles Etienne, his owner-editor.
