Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527 - 1606)

Plates from the BOOK OF PERSPECTIVE, 1604-05, illustrations to the explanation of perspective with geometric and architectural figures, Parts I & II, Latin edition. Engravings, 183/191 x 292/300 mm, plus full margins. Most show signs of binding on the left margin edge.

Vredeman de Vries, a Dutch painter and architect, wrote and illustrated what became one of the major guidebooks on perspective for designers, painters, and architects. These were essential demonstrations for artists of the day, including the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675), who was said to have a copy in his library.

Plate 15: Three types of containers in foreshortening, and an edifice with a flight of stairs. Hollstein 534i (of ii). Very good impression. An unobstrusive vertical printer's crease.

$350.
